Sections include 乬The Alkali Workers乭, 乬The Nailmakers乭, 乬The Slipper-Makers and Tailors乭, 乬The Woolcombers乭, 乬The White lead Workers乭, 乬The Chainmakers乭. The frontispiece sets the tone of the volume: it shows the body of female workers under the caption 乬Done to death乭. The Appendix is longer than appeared in the reissue of 1898 and the whole book was trimmed back by some 50 pages for the later edition.
